Without a clear vision that highlights your calling as a family, and gets very specific on how you’ll function toward THRIVING… budgets tend to feel awfully oppressive, awfully fast. If you don’t already know this, I must warn you: budgets are like gym memberships purchased in January or your buddy’s new podcast – they tend to have about a 6-week lifespan. I hope you like that very much… because that’s how it’s supposed to work, yo.) (Does that sound good? Yes I know it does. Once you’ve got that in hand, you can stop using a budget as a proverbial ruler with which to slap your hands when you reach for something you’re not supposed to have, and start using it as a funding plan for your family vision. Instead, we recommend spending about three hours to pen a family vision statement that captures the totally unique aspects of your crew and how you feel called to operate in God’s Kingdom. Step one when it comes to budgeting is actually NOT to pop open Excel and start punching in numbers. Bold claims, I know… but these is bold times, my man. What’s more, we believe that if you can master the skill of budgeting, you’ll end up with more money than you need each month. That is no less true if you find yourself with thousands of dollars more per month than you need to run your home, or if you’re pinching pennies to pay the bills.
